Most of us think of storms as inconveniences — the kind that cancel our plans, soak our shoes, or rattle our windows. But 600 million kilometers away, on the giant world of Jupiter, storms take on an entirely different meaning. They are not fleeting disturbances. They are monuments. And the greatest of them all — the Great Red Spot — has raged for at least 190 years, possibly longer.
The Great Red Spot is not just a storm; it is a persistent high‑pressure region embedded deep within Jupiter’s atmosphere. Unlike hurricanes on Earth, which are low‑pressure systems fueled by warm oceans and dissipate within weeks, Jupiter’s storm is an anticyclone that spins counterclockwise in the planet’s southern hemisphere. The current Great Red Spot is its own long‑lived titan, surviving for nearly two centuries.
