Dare to dream

On a clear still night you may find yourself looking up. The moon might have caught your eye, or maybe the big dipper. Over the eons, humans have been fascinated by one feature in particular– the bright band that makes its way across our sky. This band is known to astronomers as the Milky Way. Our galaxy alone has a couple hundred billion stars swirling around its core, but there are a hundred billion more galaxies in the observable universe.1  Have you ever wondered what’s out there? Humanity in all its manifestations is truly a phenomenon. The universe is a massive creature capable of unfathomable destruction, chaos and force. Despite all this, we exist at just the right scales and in just the right place to support life and observe beauty in this chaos. We are born with the ability to think, dream and experience the universe because we too are part of it. We have figured a lot out about our place in the universe because of our curiosity. So dare to dream, you never know what you will find.
 1. The observable universe is defined as the limit of observation. Light coming from distant points has a long way to travel. Therefore, this limit is directly related the age of the universe.

  1. I really like this approach to our place in the universe. Very thought provoking. It makes me wonder just how similar humans are to the natural and chaotic ways of the universe. While the universe IS a massive creature capable of destruction and chaos, humanity is much the same.
